Coates Selected As Quarterfinalist in Jefferson Scholars Competition

Sarah is pictured here with UVA grads from MCPS who came to offer her congratulations and support.

MCHS senior Sarah Coates has been selected as quarterfinalist in the Eastern Commonwealth region of the Jefferson Scholars

competition!  A Jefferson Scholarship is the highest honor UVA bestows.

Harold Blincoe, our longest-tenured MCHS teacher, said he is unaware of any other Madison student who has achieved this in the nearly four decades he has served MCPS.

The goal of nurturing future leaders is at the heart of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s mission: to attract to the University the most promising leaders, scholars, and citizens in the world.  The intent of this scholarship is to cover the entire cost of attendance for four years at UVA.  Each year, high schools can nominate one student for this scholarship which is based solely on merit.  This is no small achievement as there are 4,200 secondary schools who are eligible to nominate students.  Sarah moves forward in the selection process with an interview next month with the scholarship committee.  We are very proud of her and this achievement and wish her the best as she continues in this process.
