Madison County Education Foundation and Waverly Yowell Elementary School have partnered to pilot a mentor reading program at lunch. Some third grade student volunteers are paired with mentors from the community. They meet at lunch on Wednesdays and enjoy reading together, eating, and conversing. Third grade teacher, Marty Ward, expressed a need to the Education Foundation, which got this wonderful program started. She also assists the volunteers and students at lunch. Providing students with positive role models while developing a love of literacy will certainly benefit students in so many ways!
