Section 508

On December 21, 2000, the U.S. Federal Government’s Access Board issued accessibility standards for electronic and information technology under section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended. The Board also develops and maintains accessibility guidelines for the built environment, transit vehicles, and telecommunications equipment under other laws and enforces design standards for federally funded facilities. USDA Non-discrimination Statement – 2009-2010 REVISED

The USDA non-discrimination statement for school nutrition programs is to be included on all printed materials that are distributed to students, parents, and the public.  The statement below is the required language for the DOE prototype on-line forms which are part of the division’s Annual Agreement to Participate and is also required to be used on alternate forms approved by DOE.

Non-discrimination Statement:  In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Additional Information for Non-Discrimination Notice

Madison County Public Schools does not discriminate in any programs or activities on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, or the use of a dog guide or trained service animal (a service animal is an animal that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability).  The following is a list of common areas of question.

Title IX

Title IX is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.

Section 504 and ADA

Section 504 is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination, based on disabilities, in any federally funded education program or activity.  It also ensures a free and public education to each qualified student with a disability who is in the school district’s jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability.

Section 504 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) also prohibit employment discrimination.

Civil Rights

Federal civil rights laws prohibit discrimination based on sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, or the use of a dog guide or trained service animal.

Equal Access

The District provides equal access to designated youth groups as identified in its Use of School Facilities Policy and Regulation pursuant to the Boy Scouts of American Equal Access Act.

Freedom of Information Act

The Madison County School Board is committed to full compliance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and processes all requests for information in accordance with the procedures outlined in School Board Policy KBA-R: Requests for Information.

Elizabeth Patterson is Madison County School Board’s FOIA Officer.  The FOIA Officer serves as a point of contact for members of the public in requesting public records and coordinates the School Board’s compliance with FOIA.  The FOIA Officer may be reached at 540-948-3780, ext. 5108.
