Elite Softball and Baseball Teams Go to State Competition: Both Place Top 4 in State - Softball State Champions
The MCHS Softball team beat Lebanon High School 4-2 on Friday in its State Semi-Final game to advance to the State Championship against Richlands. Both teams came into the title game with identical 25-1 overall records. The Mountaineers won the State Championship 4-0. This is the 2nd State Softball Championship for the Mountaineers who also won the title in 1995.
As is the Madison tradition, the team was escorted from the County line by the Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad back to MCHS where over 500 Madison faithful were waiting to welcome our State Champions home. A huge thank you to the folks who celebrated our team entering Madison at about 8pm.
Additionally, MCHS Baseball competed in the state championship on Friday as a Virginia final four. On Friday MCHS competed in the VHSL Group 2A State Semi-Finals at Radford University. The Mountaineers gave a great effort but lost 3-1 to Dan River who would go on to win the State Title on Saturday.
I am very proud of the way we played. The boys played as a team for 7 solid innings, committing 0 errors and making great defensive plays throughout the game, as well as kept putting pressure on Dan River High School by continually getting on base. It was a great baseball game that either team could have won. – Coach David Londrey
I am so proud of our student-athletes. Baseball and Softball both represented Madison with pride and dignity on the state stage. – Superintendent Eberhardt
