William Wetsel Middle School Awarded $5,000 Environmental Grant

William Wetsel Middle School (WWMS) was recently awarded $5,000 in the Pre-K -12 Environmental Education mini grant program by the Chesapeake Bay Trust.  The grant will fund a three-day, two-night summer 2018 opportunity for middle school students currently in 7th through 8th grades.  This opportunity has been grant-funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust with the assistance of the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District.  The Chesapeake Bay Trust Pre-K - 12 Environmental Education Grant Program will provide the majority of the costs.  Students will learn:

Bay Basics:  Location, water quality/depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, etc.

Ecology Topics: Food webs, migrations, keystone species, invasive species, eutrophication, etc.

History/GeologyTopics: Marsh zones-wetlands, non-native species, revetment rock/littoral barriers, etc.

The program was initiated by WWMS science teachers Katie Walker and Kim Adams with the support and guidance of Principal Donald Dodson.
