Rising seniors, Scotti Mullen and Emillee Russell represented Madison County High School at the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls State program at Longwood University the week of June 17 - 23, 2018. The Girs State program, first presented in 1937, is one of the most respected and coveted experiential learning programs presented in the United States. The program was a weeklong immersive learning experience where girls live in "cities" within a dormitory-like setting. "I hope that all rising Juniors take the time to attend Girls State. I learned so much but mainly that our voices matter, no matter how small," stated Emillee Russell. Scotti Mullen said, "The Girls State program was an amazing experience. I learned more about politics, government and how important our veterans are to our country. I met so many awesome people and felt like I grew so much in just one week!" In addition, Mullen was recognized with the Nell Collins Hatcher Girls State Memorial Scholarship.
