Earth science teacher takes home state award

MADISON, Va. - A Madison County High School earth science teacher was recognized for his contributions to science education.

Dave Matchen was selected by the Virginia Association of Science Teachers to receive the 2022 Recognition In Science Education award in the earth science category.

According to VAST, the awards are presented to outstanding educators at all levels.

Matchen was formally recognized during a Nov. 11 ceremony in Williamsburg.

"It is an honor to be awarded by my peers for my contributions to earth science education in Virginia," Matchen said. "It recognizes my contributions to the success of the VAST quarry visits in the summer of 2022, service to the Virginia Department of Education developing earth science curriculum for the state and my time as an earth science teacher in Madison County."

Matchen received an engraved plaque to commemorate the recognition.
