Students work with area organizations in annual Arbor Day tree planting
MADISON, Va. - 2023's Arbor Day brought new life to Hoover Ridge Park, courtesy of Madison Primary School students and several area organizations.
MPS students and staff listened as Adam Downing with Virginia Cooperative Extension spoke about the importance of trees and their impact on the world.
Several MPS students then worked alongside Rappahannock Electric Cooperative representatives to plant a red sunset maple tree.
"It brings lots of different people together," said Downing. "Best of all, it brings all the kids out and they have an opportunity to be a part of something that is going to be on the landscape for the next 100 years."
Winners were awarded in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contest, sponsored by the Madison Garden Club. Smokey Bear made an appearance to congratulate the winners.
The Virginia Department of Forestry was also present at the annual event.
