Mr. Mike Coiner

Mike Coiner has served students in Madison and Greene counties, as well as the City of Charlottesville. While still in college, Mr. Coiner served as a supervisor for the CLASS after-school program in Charlottesville and began his teaching career as a fifth grade teacher at Nathanael Greene Elementary School in 1997.  While teaching, he served as the chair of the school’s technology committee and led efforts for the schoolwide implementation of the then brand-new Virginia Standards of Learning. In 2002, Mr. Coiner accepted the position of assistant principal at Ruckersville Elementary School. He served in that position for two years before being named principal of RES.

As the principal of RES, Mr. Coiner designed and implemented Greene County’s first-ever tiered instructional model. This organizational structure was met with great success and in 2010 Mr. Coiner was tasked with replicating that model at Greene County Primary School. For the next four years, Mr. Coiner implemented and supervised this tiered model and in 2014 accepted the position of principal at Madison Primary School, a position in which he continues to serve today.

Mr. Coiner received his Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Virginia, followed by a Master of Arts in teaching, also from the University of Virginia. After teaching fifth grade for several years, he returned to the University of Virginia to obtain his post-master’s school leadership and administration endorsement.
